Comic #112: No Instruction Manual? Huh. Seth looks pretty spooked. What could make him want to take such drastic precautions? 51 Comments somebodywhoknowsthings on December 13th, 2014 at 3:21 am It breaks my heart to see her trembling like that. Stay strong Claire, always remember that no matter what happens, there are people who will always love you Reply Tallon-1 on December 13th, 2014 at 7:59 am ;-; right to the feels Reply Random Wolfgirl on December 13th, 2014 at 8:25 am Once my parents argued for real and put the family at stake, I was JUST LIKE Claire in first panel. Reply Killercurrent115 on December 13th, 2014 at 8:30 am That was a nice back story, the usual parental divorce plus the door slam effect. Poor Claire must’ve been so sad at that point of her life, but it’s nice to see her father/Gordon literally being the most legit nominee for the “Best Awesome Scientist Dad” Award. Alright, as for the last two panels, I feel like Mason is gonna use his nice-guy ability, plus his kindness +5 attack on Claire. Anyone guessing that there’s gonna be advice involved in the next page? Can’t wait for it ;3 Reply Destry Soule on December 13th, 2014 at 6:58 pm considering theres another woman i dont think he gets that award. Reply Valkeiper2012 on December 14th, 2014 at 2:55 pm it’s not ALL his fault. There was another man as well. Fidelity seems to NOT be a factor in that family. Infidelity does. Reply Destry Soule on December 14th, 2014 at 3:14 pm still two wrongs don’t make a right. Reply Valkeiper2012 on December 15th, 2014 at 2:22 am but two wrights make an airplane. I have to wonder why they bothered. Good thing they DID marry, though. Otherwise, Claire would have been raised by her mother. Teh Phuufs on December 15th, 2014 at 2:45 am Helen and Gordon’s relationship wasn’t always bad. Granted they got hot/heavy too quickly and rushed into marriage/having a child. They really did care for each other at one point but things dissolved as time passed and this was the result Jagmaster69 on December 13th, 2014 at 9:18 am May we have a backstory on helen and gorden? Reply Killercurrent115 on December 13th, 2014 at 10:45 am John Freeman? Have you lived a full life yet? Reply Teh Phuufs on December 14th, 2014 at 10:46 am Possibly, they are an interesting duo. Would readers still like to see how their relationship started even if they know it ended badly? We would like to do more elaborate tales of secondary characters, but time is restricted with UQ having biweekly updates. Perhaps a bonus comic will be in the works, but it just depends — we don’t want to slack off UQ updates to just do bonus-comic pages. Reply Valkeiper2012 on December 14th, 2014 at 2:58 pm In truth, I would like to see their backstory AFTER Claire returns. Reply Alex Smith on December 13th, 2014 at 10:56 am I don’t like arguing, shouting and fighting. I try to avoid confrontation. I can imagine if I was one of the participants of the actual argument, I would probably be the one trembling… Reply Toshiro Tushima on December 13th, 2014 at 8:10 pm I dont like arguing, shouting or fighting either. Reply Vampbanshee on December 13th, 2014 at 11:02 am sad. look like Claire try fix the family back together again. How?? she build the time machine, like back to future. Reply Toshiro Tushima on December 13th, 2014 at 2:33 pm Of course! Maybe that was the real reason. Except….What happened to her father/Gordon? Reply Vampbanshee on December 13th, 2014 at 8:59 pm her father? mmm can’t be that old for 10 years Reply Valkeiper2012 on December 14th, 2014 at 3:01 pm I think that’s why T-T is wondering. SOMETHING happened to Claire’s father. Something that made Claire devoted to finishing he father’s dream. Since we don’t yet know what that dream is, we can only surmise Claire’s teleporting pod as something to do with it. Reply Toshiro Tushima on December 13th, 2014 at 2:35 pm I knew this would happen between parents to end up like this; A divorce. Poor Claire… Reply cr1ms0n t1ger on December 13th, 2014 at 3:37 pm Glad she’s coming back to the rest of the group. I’m hoping that everything will be alright between her and Sesame. Well, at least Mason will be there to comfort her. A thought crossed my mind a while ago. There’s only one way to explain it- DOCTOR WHO MODE ACTIVATE (puts on an angry face and starts talking in a Scottish accent): Question: Well, the questions are simple: who, why, where and when? We know who: A young genius with a fantastic body (seriously, why can’t my companions be like her). Where and when are easy too: 743 AE, the kingdom of Alder. But the big question is- why. Why there and then of all places in all of time and space. The capsule she accidentally fell in had no coordinates programmed into it. Answer: Imagine for a moment that time is like a highway. Well, it’s not. In fact it’s totally different the a highway. But because you wouldn’t understand and I just don’t care, let’s say it is like a highway. There are many ways you can get on it. A lot of roads are connected to it. When you get on, you know where you will exit. That’s time-travel. But what if you were travelling blind. Well, besides cause all sorts of problems it traffic, you will eventually need to exit. And the bigger the exit, the more likely you will drive trough it. That big exit would be an event in time. A big, huge temporal tipping point where anything could happen. And that’s how Claire ended up there and then. Something big is about to happen. Now the real question is-What? Reply ColonelSkullZ on December 16th, 2014 at 9:45 am I’m wondering if maybe Claire didn’t travel through time, but simply transported herself into a new undiscovered area of space (maybe she got caught in a worm hole?) I feel this is better to explain why the map and people were unknown to her, and this could explain why things are not advanced as her world, their technology is simply not as advanced as her home as the presence of magic would mean tools and technology is somewhat second best in comparison (nothing is really as good a magic, or the force, nothing beats the force) Reply cr1ms0n t1ger on December 16th, 2014 at 2:35 pm I thought about that too. Basically it’s kind of like in Stargate (the movies and series). Some alien race brought the Fera (along with the others) there for research or as a source of cheep labor. And that’s is also a good point. A world where magic exists has little need for technology and even less need for science. So how could the Fera Claire knows come from such a world? It could means one of 3 things: a) There was an event in the past that dispelled all magic from that world. The details were lost to history. 2) It’s actually a post apocalyptic future and magic is a result of some dimension-ripping weapons. III) As you stated, she moved to a previously undiscovered planet that has some unique dimensional properties that some of it’s inhabitants are attuned to, hence magic. The III scenario seems likely. You’d expect a genius would know how the homworld of her people was called. But that name may have been changed throughout history… And yes. NOTHING beats the Force. Reply Lostcheetah on December 13th, 2014 at 5:25 pm oh man… those last two pages… that’s painful Reply Alex Dixon on December 13th, 2014 at 6:11 pm damn, this chapter is about the crew’s painful past. now all we need is mason’s. Reply Teh Phuufs on December 13th, 2014 at 6:30 pm Actually Claire’s is the one that has been the most elaborate. The rest of the main characters will have their own flashbacks to their pasts and such — just trying to space them apart so it isn’t flashback city! Reply Guest on December 13th, 2014 at 8:05 pm yeah. Man of Steel tried that….but look how that turned out…….though it worked with Batman Begins. Reply Valkeiper2012 on December 14th, 2014 at 3:08 pm problem is… DC was trying to remake/modify background stories which had been established decades ago. The uberquest background have yet to be established in full. Teh and Skids are introducing the background very well. I’m sure we will eventually learn more of our sweet Mason and the girls, but we only need just the bare essentials right now. Reply Victor Masi on December 14th, 2014 at 5:35 pm well said, dude. Valkeiper2012 on December 15th, 2014 at 2:23 am TY, but it is the truth. wish I was so good in the books I’m writing. Victor Masi on December 15th, 2014 at 2:13 pm actually, I’ve heard that a lot of writers in the beginning are rather inexperienced in making stories. That being said, the key to becoming a great writer, artist, or both is to be the eternal student……………..actually that principle can apply to anyone who engages in critical, cognitive thought/inquiry, no matter what profession they choose to follow in life, what ideas they wish to share with others, etc. Victor Masi on December 13th, 2014 at 8:48 pm yeah, you don’t want the story to end up like Man of Steel….the jumps between the flashbacks and the present would be sooooooooo out of whack. Reply Victor Masi on December 13th, 2014 at 8:03 pm I now have five buckets full of tears……tried drinking one, but it was way too salty. Reply GG1 on December 13th, 2014 at 11:30 pm Damn it Skidd, you really know how to write a really touching story, I felt so sad for Claire I wanted to jump in and hug her too. It’s really sad when adults go through this, especially for the kids. Just absolutely love Uberquest. It’s one of the most best stories I read. Reply DemonPanther on December 14th, 2014 at 1:35 am And the feels have now reached their climax. After seeing Claire in the first panel, I had the strongest urge to give her a hug… Reply Simon Dexter on December 14th, 2014 at 10:28 am I think this just solidifies why Claire is my least favorite in the comic. Because I’ve dealt with what she has, I hate arguing and shouting and I tend to hear it a lot. And I too have become awkward because of it. However she still blames Sesame for her situation when it was her blatant rudeness that caused her to react that way, and she thinks just causing trouble and manipulating people (a la Mason) is an okay thing to do? I suck with people too but being annoying and self centered is a lb awful stereotype that I’m just tired of seeing. I really hope she improves as it goes (I’d be genuinely shocked if she didn’t improve) because her attitude at times has almost been a deal breaker for this comic, thankfully it’s been spread out enough that I’m still here. Reply Teh Phuufs on December 14th, 2014 at 10:44 am We always appreciate reader insight. I should point out we have received similar complaints on our other characters, such as Farron and Sesame. While none of the characters will be perfect, they will evolve as the story goes.Yes Claire does some morally questionable things, but so will all the other protagonists in some way or another. They have to make mistakes, learn through experience and have various obstacles to test their character. This is only an insight to show part of why Claire is a painfully awkward as she is. While we know not every character will resonate with every reader, we tried to supply a variety of personalities and back-stories that we hope can reach a broad audience. Reply Valkeiper2012 on December 14th, 2014 at 3:14 pm and you’re doing so very well. I’m writing a series of books right now (book #1 is over 1000 pages) and I’m having trouble trying to provide background without slowing the overall story. I will figure it out… eventually. Reply ColonelSkullZ on December 16th, 2014 at 9:59 am I find that creating a character sheet helps, with each character I have (main and some sub’s) I write out their bio and identifying features (age height etc) and then I design their motivations (revenge, love etc) and from that I write out a small backstory (just short and not very detailed) as the book goes along, I add to the backstory, (without major changes) as the book evolves so does the character at the end the book is still bad, but then you rewrite it with the plot in mind, and your character now flows from your mind like a second personality (with a neat sheet to reference when your stuck or forget something minor) Reply Arthur Frelling Dent on December 14th, 2014 at 4:05 pm mmm, after all that heaviness- hopefully a panel with a laugh out lout pratfall… to keep the demons at bay. Reply Teh Phuufs on December 14th, 2014 at 9:28 pm It will be getting lighter from here on out. 🙂 At least for a little while. Reply GG1 on December 14th, 2014 at 8:50 pm Teh Phuufs, I for one think that Uberquest is one of the best written stories, with the characters backgrounds occasionally exposed it makes Uberquest an excellent read and story, along with the really terrific artwork, this is definitely one of my favs. Don’t let others that complain about the sad or bad parts that happen to the characters deter you from keeping a great story going, heck, that’s life. And Uberquest really it tells you like it is. Reply Valkeiper2012 on December 15th, 2014 at 2:28 am agreed Reply kenjithefolf on December 15th, 2014 at 2:09 am Dam it breaks my heart seeing things like this Reply Lexni on December 15th, 2014 at 2:28 am Try not to cry, try not to cry *cries buckets of tears* poor Claire! Which makes it even worse T~T Reply Victor Masi on December 16th, 2014 at 12:37 am anyone looking forward to page 80? Reply IAmHawz on December 16th, 2014 at 5:00 am No worries Claire!
